Our usual hattrick of tips takes a place on the bench this week as we take an in-depth look at the US Open. The prestigious American tennis tournament takes place without our very own Andy Murray, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting or profitable!
This tournament will be a turning of the tides or a stay of execution for the old guard on both sides. The men’s will be without a handful of its stars including Murray, Wawrinka, Djokovic and Raonic. This leaves the door open for the old fogies like Federer but may also offer an opportunity to take a look into the future of the game.
Like the men’s the women’s is also missing a star player as Serena Williams misses out after offering up the poor excuse of being a new mother. Boooo!
In the men’s draw both Nadal and Federer have been drawn into the top half leaving quite the gap of talent at the bottom. Just Tsonga, Alexander Zverev or a young Lucas Pouille are in this draw. This is an immense opportunity for one of these to make a final if not win the tournament itself.
Despite looking down and out Federer has seen a resurgence. How long it lasts is yet to be seen, a win here could be a final goodbye or more of the same. Either way most bookies have him favourite at 15/8 including Paddy Power. Nadal sits at 7/2 but has not made a semi in his last three events.
One of the most interesting looks in the top half is the mercurial Nick Kyrgios. Brilliant and terrible in equal measure the Aussie could face Federer in the 2nd Quarter and if he does succeed you might see a pretty pay packet at 13/2.
In the bottom half, your money should be on Zverev. His experience may be limited and only a few wins on hard court but he beat Federer in Montreal and has an easy line to the final. If he makes short work of it he could be much fresher than the old Swiss. He stands at 11/2 to win the tournament.
On the women’s side of the tournament, Williams is obviously the biggest miss. In her stead, Muguruzu has lit up 2017 and it has shown in the odds with her numbers at 9/2. The bookmakers are throwing it wide open this year as 10 players are sub 20/1 making it difficult to pick out a safe bet but plenty of leverage to make some money.
Elena Svitolova was immense in Toronto carving her way through a myriad of stars. If she carries this form she will require some stopping. She even flew past Muguruzu in Canada. At 11/4 with Paddy Power, she could be favourite with the punters.
Simona Halep is one of the best in form players on the circuit right now and has a 70% win record at the US Open at 7/2 through Betfred she could be a safe bet to at least reach the semi’s if not go all the way.
Flushing Meadows will rove to be an exciting open book this year and we expect a few upsets!
